Sneaky dreadlocks thieves give new meaning to the phrase 'cut and run'

2/27/2013

A weird crime wave is sweeping South Africa. Thieves are pouncing on dreadlocked victims, slicing off their hair with knives or broken glass and then making their getaway. Zimbabwean Mutsa Madonko reportedly made national headlines in January when he was attacked outside a club in Johannesburg by "hair jackers" who made off with the locks he'd spent 10 years growing. The stolen hair ultimately winds up being woven on to the scalps of people who want instant dreadlocks, and increasing demand for the look is resulting in more dreadlock crimes. "These [criminals] are ruthless," complained stylist Andile Khumalo, who's so scared of having his hair stolen he covers his head when he's in public. [Source]
