For the record, this is where things in "Fringe" went really wrong. Researchers at Duke University say that their lab rats have developed a sixth sense thanks to an implant in their brains — and they're now capable of "touching" infrared light that they shouldn't be able to see. The scientists say that while previous "brain-machine interfaces" have worked to restore function, this is the first example of such a device augmenting function. As one of the researchers says, it is "literally enabling a normal animal to acquire a sixth sense." Similar tech could help humans with a damaged visual cortex regain their sight. [Source]
