Dying mom gets unapproved drug due to video plea
5/1/2012Darlene Gant's last chance at beating stage-four breast cancer lies in an unapproved drug that is set for a June release. Knowing she might not have that long, she posted a heartfelt video pleading with the drug's maker, Genentech, to release the drug early under a compassionate use provision. It worked. Gant's wrenching video -- in which she imagines the motherless future of her young son -- drove viewers everywhere to light up Genentech's switchboard. The company agreed, and Gant began her first round of treatment last week. Even if the treatment only gives her a few more months, she says that time "is priceless for a family."
