Earth's toughest truck survives 43,500 mile Antarctic trek
4/3/2012Fans of BBC's "Top Gear" may remember the Toyota Hilux as the truck that can't be killed, even when it's placed atop a building that is then blown up. Proving once again that it's the toughest thing on four wheels, Toyota recently announced that a trio of Hiluxes returned from a record-breaking four-month, 43,500 mile-long trek through the world's southernmost areas. The specially-equipped pickup trucks have tires with a contact point 17 times larger than a standard tire, can withstand altitudes of 3,400 meters and temperatures of negative 50 degrees. They are built to run on jet fuel, since, at those temperatures, standard diesel would turn to jelly.
