Weird, cute echidna babies are the first bred in captivity
12/21/2012Wonderful news! There’s been a world-first success at Perth Zoo in breeding near-extinct echidna, which means with a few tweaks we could have echidnas, aka spiny anteaters, in Australia just turning these things out as fast as ... wait. Hmmm. Wow, are you seeing these things?! The long-beaked echidna, almost extinct in New Guinea, hatches from an egg after incubating for 11 days. Fully grown they look like a fur caftan come to life. In their baby “puggle” state they sort of look like creatures dreamed up on a studio backlot. Should we ask if a production art house is playing a prank on Perth Zoo? Welcome to the world, you adorable weirdoes. We can’t wait for there to be more of you. [Source]
