Leave it to China to grow vegetables on Mars

12/7/2012

Is your love of fresh vegetables holding you back from reserving a spot on the Elon Musk Mars colony? Worry not, for Chinese researchers have successfully sprouted greens in extraterrestrial conditions. Dubbed the "ecological life support system," in addition to growing edible plants, the 10,000 cubic foot cabin should also produce air and water, limiting the amount of stuff space travelers will need to tote along on rocket ships. A few greens might not boost those dehydrated meal packets to Michelin star quality, but they should help. Although the Chinese haven't yet landed a man on the moon, they plan to build a manned space station by 2020 — giving them plenty of time to work gardening into those astronaut training sessions.
