A skier can pack all the safety necessities — beacon, shovel, probe — for adventure in the backcountry, but the most effective is a partner with calm and courage. Buried under a 700-foot wide avalanche east of Salt Lake City, Elisabeth Malloy nonetheless had faith that "Adam would find me." And Adam Morrey, her boyfriend and skiing companion, did just that, first freeing himself from waist-high snow, then locating Malloy with an avalanche beacon and digging her loose. Another skier helped him transport her down the mountain until a rescue helicopter arrived more than two hours later. "Our judgment was overwhelmed by the pursuit of having more fun," admitted Malloy, who was treated for frostbite. [Source]
