AWOL Marine arrested 31 years after a desertion and a sex change
1/13/2013Donald Tremblay didn't just desert the Marines: eventually, he deserted Donald, too. After years of soul-searching, Tremblay, who left the Marines in 1981, underwent hormone therapy and became Elizabeth. But when a sheriff's deputy showed up at her door in Poland, Maine, it was to arrest the private who 31 years ago told his superiors he was going home, upset that a promised assignment was changed. Tremblay changed her first name in the mid-1990s, but did nothing to conceal her whereabouts — even her Social Security number is the same. There's no explanation for why the Marines took so long to find her, and her potential punishment is undetermined. "The only thing they have on me is desertion," she said. "Other than that, I was a good Marine." [Source]
