Hundreds show up to mourn elk shot by cop

1/7/2013

Public mourning following a police-involved shooting is a sad fact of life, but usually the person being mourned is, you know, a person. That wasn't the case in Boulder, Colo., where around 200 people gathered to celebrate the life of a bull elk that was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer. Town residents gave mixed reports about whether the animal was aggressive, but some considered it a "guardian" of the area. "To murder an animal who feels like he's part of the neighborhood is despicable," said one vigil-goer. The alleged elk assassin is now on adminstrative leave, as is a fellow cop suspected of loading the animal's body into a truck. [Source]

Is this an appropriation celebration of an animal, or just too much drama?
