End-of-world fears spark a Russian run on flashlights, vodka
12/10/2012Don't tell the people of Russia the world isn't ending on Dec. 21: It will only make them more worried. A Mayan doomsday prediction has sparked panic in the former Soviet republic, with residents rushing to stock up on flashlights, thermoses, kerosene, candles, matches, canned foods and vodka. Of course, if their worst fears were to come true, they'd need none of these supplies, but we digress. Concern was apparently heightened after Russian politicians asked TV stations not to report on the apocalyptic prophesy, and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said he didn't "believe in the end of the world," adding darkly, "At least, not this year."
