Endangered blind spider halts highway construction

9/14/2012

It’s not every day that a creature the size of a dime can halt a $15 million Texas highway project. A biologist consultant with the Texas Department of Transportation has confirmed the discovery of an endangered spider by workers constructing a highway underpass project on Texas Highway 151. The Braken Bat Cave Meshweaver is an eyeless arachnid that was added to the endangered species list 12 years ago. Now construction on the project has been stopped until the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Federal Highway Administration can decide the best way to proceed without disturbing the rare spider's habitat. [Source]
