[MOST ANGRY COMMENTS] A look back at our first week.
Our headline was "Surprise! Oscar voters are mainly old white guys" and that immediately led readers to complain that we were being ageist. "Personally I can't believe MSN would allow this article to be written when it clearly is a slam against anyone who is an older white male." Point taken, movienut7 (and others) but here are the facts: "Nearly 94% of them are Caucasian, 77% are male and only 14% are younger than 50."
During Sunday night's Oscar broadcast, the words "I'd like to thank the Academy" will be uttered more times than anything other than "Shouldn't this be over by now?" But who are the people whose votes fill those wax-sealed envelopes? SPOILER ALERT: If you're an old white guy, you may already be a member.
According to exhaustive research by the Los Angeles Times, the 5,765 Academy voters are "markedly less diverse than the moviegoing public." Nearly 94% of them are Caucasian, 77% are male and only 14% are younger than 50. That might explain why "Mars Needs Moms" didn't get the Oscar nod it so obviously deserved.
Would a more diverse Academy lead to more deserving winners?
In todays day and age when we are still being run by the "all powerful white man" says a lot about Hollywood. I did not realize there was that much of a undeversified panel of voters. This is very sad yet it is one of those "figures" type of deal. Thats probably why it took so long for Denzel to get an Oscar. Now it seems like it was something they felt they better do or face a mutney. Out with the old and in with the new is my vote!
What is so wrong with being an older white male? This article is very racist. What kind of reaction does MSN think they might get if this article said older black males in the same context. When did it become such a bad thing to be an older white male? Personally I can't believe MSN would allow this article to be written when it clearly is a slam against anyone who is an older white male. Shame on you MSN for publishing such a racist article.
Once again, if you have the unfortunate luck of being the combination of old, white, and male, you are trash and are only worthy of condemnation because once upon a time, people not at all related to you but who happened to share those traits did bad things to people.
Stereotypes: they're still around, just not for minorities anymore.

If you don't like lower-case (implication: lower value people) "old white guys" then never use a TV, electricity, airplanes nor just about anything else in the world.
