A two-year experiment at Newcastle University suggests you can deter theft by hanging a giant poster of eyes and the phrase "We are watching you." There were 62 percent fewer thefts than the previous year at bike racks where the poster was placed, while racks without the poster saw thefts rise by 63 percent. "One strong possibility is that the images of eyes work by making people feel watched," said professor and study co-author Daniel Nettle. "We care what other people think about us, and as a result we behave better when we feel we are being observed." Maybe we can take a page from their book and stop thieving roommates by duct-taping our Instagram selfies to the fridge. #alwayswatching [Source]
