Famous painting of angsty man sells for $120 million
5/3/2012A version of "The Scream," one of the most famous pieces in art, was sold today for the shout-out-loud price of $120 million (well, $119,922,500) at an auction at Sotheby's in New York. The pastel-on-board painting was one of four renderings composed by the Norwegian expressionist Edvard Munch, and was the only one that was privately owned (The others are in Norwegian museums). The seller was Norwegian businessman Petter Olsen, whose father was a friend and patron of Munch. The previous record for auctioned artwork was a 2010 sale of Pablo Picasso's "Nude, Green Leaves, and Bust," which sold for $106.5 million.
