Angry pitchfork-wielding farmers protest fines against neighbor
8/11/2012It must have been quite a sight when an angry pack of pitchfork-wielding Virginians showed up at a zoning meeting last week to protest fines over a children's birthday party. But when folks in Paris, Va., heard officials had threatened to fine Martha Boneta nearly $5,000 for holding "unlicensed" events (which included pumpkin carvings and craft workshops in addition to the kid's party) on her farm, they turned out in droves. Boneta says she's doing the same thing farmers have been doing for generations and she shouldn’t be fined for it, but county officials say licensing rules have changed and Boneta needs to keep up.
