No large fries for you, NYC — there's a whopper of a fast-food strike
11/29/2012New Yorkers will have to spring for white-linen lunches today. For the first time EVER, Gotham's fast-food workers are walking off their McJobs en masse, striking for more cash and the chance to unionize without retaliation. You'll find empty kitchens at McDonald's, Burger King, Domino's, KFC, Taco Bell, Wendy's and Papa John's. "They're not paying us enough to survive," says one McDonald's employee earning $8.75 an hour ($1.50 over New York's minimum wage) after two years on the job — and in NYC, that doesn't go far. The massive one-day walkout is spearheaded by 40 determined organizers who want pay boosted to $15 per hour, saying many workers currently can't afford food, rent or even subway fare. [Source]
