Egyptian female news anchor's appearance makes headlines

9/3/2012

Egypt has seen its fair share of historic events in the last couple of years, including a regime change and free elections. Now one woman's headscarf can be added to the list of important moments. Dressed in a cream-colored headscarf and dark suit, Fatma Nabil became Egypt's first female news anchor to wear a Muslim veil on state television. The headscarf was previously banned under the regime of Hosni Mubarek, but that was lifted by Salah Abdel-Maqsoud, Egypt's information minister and a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. Trailblazing Nabil wore the garment on Sunday and said afterwards, "Finally! The revolution has reached Maspero” (the headquarters of the state TV and broadcast building). [Source]
