101-year-old marathoner trains for last race, and means it this time

1/26/2013

He's either the geezer who cried wolf, or he simply forgot what he'd said, which is one of the hazards of being 101. But after saying last April's London Marathon would be the last time he tackles 26 miles, Fauja Singh is taking a do-over next month in Hong Kong. Though he didn't take up running until he was 89, Singh has decided nine marathons is enough. He insisted that he will continue to run four hours a day "to inspire the masses." The thought of a seven-hour slog through the streets of Hong Kong might inspire most of us to crash on the couch instead, but here's a salute to the final run of the ancient marathoner. Maybe.
