Truck driver says FedEx canned him for Russian accent, sues
11/29/2012How do you say "wrongful termination" in Russian? We could ask Ismail Aliyev, a Utah truck driver who has filed a discrimination suit against FedEx, contending the company canned him because of his Russian accent. His lawyer insists his client's English is "very understandable" and that Aliyev offered to meet with higher-ups to prove it. Aliyev, a Russian Turk who came to the U.S. in 2005, says that FedEx ordered the trucking contractor he works for to fire him, even though he'd been driving with no problems and passed a language test. "I think for a driver, my English is not too bad," he says. As long as he can say "Sign here, please," he ought to be golden. [Source]
