Outgoing president wants to change Mexico's name

11/23/2012

Mexican President Felipe Calderon is looking to change the country's name. Unimaginatively, the new name is likely to be, um, Mexico. The country's official name is the United States of Mexico, which it adopted in 1824 after the end of the Mexican War of Independence against Spain. But President Calderon, who leaves office on December 1, now feels it's time for the country to stand on its own two feet and drop the "United States of," which at the time was intended to emulate the free and democratic nation to the north (no, not Canada).
