I'm gonna go ahead and NOT follow the upcoming debate on whether banning female genital mutilation is "cultural imperialism"
Twitter erupts with mixed emotion over female genital mutilation ban11/27/2012
Tweets are ranging from "F-CK YEAH" to "mixed feelings" to "Will it make a difference!?!" today as news circulates on the Internet of a landmark resolution by the United Nations' Human Rights Committee to globally ban female genital mutilation, the practice of cutting up (and off, in some cases) the genital areas of young girls. Human rights groups have long tried to outlaw "female circumcision," while other groups have argued it's a cultural tradition that outsiders shouldn’t interfere with. The approval of the resolution, backed by such high-profile supporters as Hillary Clinton, is "virtually certain" to be approved by the full United Nations General Assembly in a vote anticipated later this year. Should this practice be globally banned or should we respect the customs of different cultures?
