First drug to prevent HIV is approved — and it's expensive

7/17/2012

A drug has just been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration which helps prevent people from contracting HIV. Truvada is nothing new — it’s been used to treat HIV patients by slowing down the disease’s ability to replicate since 2004. But, now, well people will be able to get a prescription to safeguard against getting HIV in the first place. Clinical trials in 2010 showed it could reduce the risk of contagion by up to 42 percent among individuals who regularly engaged in unprotect sex with multiple partners. But before you roll out the black plastic and invite the neighbors over for a bath salts-fuelled, hats-off “car key” party, be aware the medication won’t come cheap. A year’s worth of relative safety and piece of mind, at $40 per pill, will set you back at least $13,900. [Source]
