Liberal Arts majors in Fla. will soon be paying liberally

11/6/2012

Oh, the Humanities! For college students in Florida, particularly thou lowly art history, philosophy and drama majors, tuition may soon be based on what academic disciplines are most attractive to potential employers. The proposal from a task force commissioned by Gov. Rick Scott would allow public universities to charge different tuition rates based on majors. Those in-demand by employers -- like the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) majors -- would get a proposed three-year tuition freeze, because they are “high-skill, high-wage, high-demand” disciplines. Meanwhile, if you’re dreaming of being a writer or dancer, prepare to pay up, unless there is a sudden need for aspiring novelists or starving artists. [Source]
