Activists tell Florida to get with the times and stop using 'R-word'

2/25/2013

Activists are trying to banish the word "retard" from the Sunshine State. The Arc of Florida, a charity for people with developmental disabilities, wants the state to remove the "R-word" from state regulations — meaning any references to "mentally retarded" or "mental retardation." The advocates want to change the phrases to "intellectually disabled" and "intellectual disability." "It's not about political correctness," says Arc affiliate CEO Mark Swain. "It's about doing the right thing — it's about respect." Florida is one of only 11 states that haven’t dropped the word from regulations, and Congress banned it from federal use in 2010. We know this mom would agree. [Source]
