Islamist sect leader kept children in underground bunker for a decade
8/10/2012Russian police have discovered that members of the Fayzarahmanist Islamist sect, based near Kazan, have been living underground. Seventy members, including 20 children as young as 18 months, are believed to have been living in squalid conditions for nearly a decade. Many of its younger members have apparently never seen the light of day because they were born in the eight-story subterranean hideout dug into the basement of a building. The cult's leader Fayzrahaman Satarov, who's in his 80s, reportedly forbade most of his followers to leave the bunker even for medical attention. Police will be investigating claims of child abuse, although the children reportedly seemed physically healthy, albeit dirty, when they surfaced. [Source]
