Former TSA head says knives should be allowed on planes

4/15/2012

Offering a breath of redemption to every air traveler who's been embarrassingly de-shoed or had their tweezers confiscated, the former head of the Transportation Security Administration has called the TSA a "national embarrassment" and argued items like knives, lighters and even liquids should be allowed through security. Kip Hawley contends that having a list of explicitly banned items gives would-be terrorists a blueprint for what to leave at home and pushes TSA employees into the complacent roles of "kindergarten teachers." Instead, he says, the process should be more randomized and local officials given greater discretion to customize their own processes. There's no comment yet from the TSA, but could a world where we get to keep bottled water be in our future?
