FBI agent said topless photo was intended as a joke

11/16/2012

What was supposedly intended as a practical joke ended up being part of the chain of events that cost the director of the CIA his job. FBI Special Agent Frederick Humphries, who both started the investigation that led to David Petraeus' resignation and got swept up in it, said the photo of him posing shirtless with target dummies "was a tongue-in-cheek joke" he sent to dozens of friends in 2010. One of the recipients was Jill Kelley, the Florida socialite who spoke to Humphries, a family friend, about the threatening emails she had received. The subsequent investigation revealed the affair between now-ex CIA director Petraeus and his biographer, Paula Broadwell, and since the FBI cybercrime division was checking Kelley's computer, it also revealed Humphries’ revealing photo.
