French welcome 2013 with proud display of 1,193 burning cars

1/2/2013

Most countries have a unique way of ringing in the New Year. For the French, this involves torching cars. Interior Minister Manuel Valls announced that 1,193 vehicles went up in flames on New Year's Eve, courtesy of young vandals from poorer neighborhoods, who have welcomed a new year by burning empty parked cars since the 1990s. Most of the cars were torched in Seine-Saint-Denis, an outer suburb of Paris, followed by two regions near Strasbourg in eastern France. The French government was criticized for releasing the figures, with opposing politicians claiming it encourages the competitive young firebugs to lift their car-burning game next year. [Source]
