Fear of Fukushima radiation causing kids to get fat, researchers say

12/29/2012

The repercussions of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami which led to Japan's worst nuclear disaster continue to unfold. A new study conducted by Japan's government which measured the heights and weights of 700,000 school children suggests that the disproportionate obesity levels of children in the Fukushima area are the result of radiation fears which have reduced outdoor activity. As of September, more than 18 months after the accident, outdoor activities are still restricted at 71 elementary and junior high schools. The long-term ramifications of radiation exposure in the area are unknown. [Source]
