Gatorade's nasty ingredient: good for preventing fire, terrible for us
12/14/2012So what's your favorite flavor of flame retardant? We can't decide between lemon-lime or fruit punch. Gatorade — everyone's favorite plastic-bottled thirst quencher — contains brominated vegetable oil (BVO). Bromine is the same stuff they put on fabrics so they won't catch on fire. This isn't the newest of news, but it's back in the press because of Sarah Kavanagh. The 15-year-old Missouri girl posted a Change.org petition asking Gatorade to stuff fewer chemicals in their drinks, noting that BVO has been banned in Japan and Europe. We'll raise a glass to that … but it's probably not going to be filled with Gatorade. [Source]
