'Gay' penguins in Denmark are now the proud parents of a healthy chick

11/10/2012

As if their coupling wasn't controversial enough already, a Denmark zoo's "gay" penguins have adopted a baby chick. Keepers at the Odense Zoo say the pair have tried to steal eggs from mother penguins in the past, and even went so far as to try to incubate a dead herring. But when a female penguin abandoned one of her eggs, the two males swooped in and claimed guardianship. Keepers tested their parenting skills on a ball and soon discovered they were more than capable of incubating the egg. The pair welcomed a healthy chick about a month ago and are now caring for it using the same techniques — such as taking turns hunting and incubating the egg — that mother and father penguins use.
