Baboons prove cheating on your partner isn't just for humans anymore
2/12/2013Think of them as a harem. Gelada baboon packs have one dominant male, who has exclusive dating rights with all the females — at least, he's supposed to. A recent study found that these monkeys not only cheat on each other, but they go to great lengths to hide it, frequently sneaking off into the bushes for quiet quickies. Gelada baboons are among the only animals (aside from humans) that engage in "tactical deception," meaning they plan and hide behavior they know is socially unacceptable. Even though one-in-five "extra-marital" affairs end with the offending male being caught and beaten by the pack leader, this doesn’t compel the cheating baboons to change their behavior, something scientists call "a pity."
