Hoity-toity dictionary names GIF as American word of the year
11/13/2012It's a big day for the graphic interchange format. GIF, the cute little acronym for those slivers of video that make our lives so much brighter, was awarded the title of Word of the Year in the United States by the Oxford University Press, publisher of the Oxford Dictionaries. The lexicographers on the judging panel cited the word's "evolution" into a social media tool with "serious applications including research and journalism" as justification for the award. Several words, including "facetious" and "loquacious" have started petitions to secede from the dictionary, while many others have asserted they're moving to Canada in protest. [Source]
