There are few things more terrifying than 'gigantic jet lightning'
2/27/2013We're pretty sure we can live without seeing this insane weather phenomenon up close, because it looks both incredible and terrifying. It's called "gigantic jet" lightning, and as scientists revealed this week, a 2010 episode in China resulted in "huge and mysterious" bolts stretching 55 miles above thunderclouds into the upper atmosphere. The little-seen weather event, which is typically observed in the tropics, was first confirmed in 2001, when it was spotted reaching 44 miles into the skies over the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. The sighting in China marked its most-northern appearance on record. [Source]
