Disabled girl arrested for blasphemy, could face death penalty

8/20/2012

An 11-year-old girl believed to have Down Syndrome has been arrested for blasphemy after being accused of desecrating the Quran. The Christian girl, known only as Ramsha, was removed from her home in Islamabad, Pakistan, after an angry mob converged on her predominantly Christian neighborhood, threatening to torch other residents' homes if she wasn't punished. The girl was reportedly gathering paper for a cooking fire when "a local resident" accused her of burning pages from the Quran. In Pakistan, blasphemy is punishable by death, but President Asif Ali Zardari has called for an "urgent report" on the situation, based on the girl's "vulnerable" condition. [Source]
