Goodbye cavities, hello salty fresh seaweed toothpaste

7/4/2012

Move over mint, salty seaweed may be the next toothpaste flavor on the horizon. Scientists have honed in on a seaweed enzyme they believe has the ability to get into those hard to brush places and obliterate the bacteria in plaque that causes tooth decay. Researchers made the discovery while studying whether the seaweed extract could clean ships' hulls, but soon realized their findings had much larger applications. They hope to incorporate the wonder enzyme into toothpaste, mouthwash and denture cleaning solution. We're not so sure about experiencing the taste of the ocean first thing in the morning, but if it helps avoid the dentist's drill, we'll give it a try. Here's to hoping they disguise that seaweed flavor!
