Idiot congressman says 'legitimate rape' rarely causes pregnancy

8/19/2012

A GOP Senate nominee was met with rather dumbfounded criticism today after, while explaining why he opposes abortion under any circumstances, he told a FOX News reporter that women don't get pregnant very often in cases of "legitimate rape" because their bodies have ways to "shut that whole thing down." U.S. Rep. Todd Akin of Missouri didn't specify what exactly those biological mechanisms are (Self-imploding eggs that detect nonconsensual sperm? Rape antibodies capable of flushing unauthorized semen?), but he insisted he'd heard about the medical phenomenon from doctors. We're not sure exactly which doctors he's been talking to — or what a "legitimate rape" is — but we're pretty sure this can't be good for his campaign. [Source]

UPDATE: Akin issued a statement on Sunday afternoon saying he misspoke during the interview and his comments do not reflect his "deep empathy … for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year." Akin said though he knows abortion is an emotionally charged issue, "I don't believe that harming another innocent victim is the right course of action."
