Grand Canyon might be much, much older than geologists suspected

11/30/2012

Conventional geological wisdom holds that the Grand Canyon is around five to six million years old. But a new study suggests that this wonder of the world might have been carved 70 million years ago — old enough to have been visited by busloads of dinosaur tourists every day. Researchers analyzed minerals in the bottom of the canyon to determine its new age, but their work has divided geologists who believe the previous calculations are still correct. Rebecca Flowers of the University of Colorado Boulder, the new study's lead researcher, said she hopes her study will "stimulate more work to decipher the mysteries." [Source]
