Attention, self-checkout scammers and shoplifters: The Man is on to you. He knows you're scanning your organic bananas as the pesticide-laced variety, or "forgetting" to scan certain items by leaving them in the cart. A National Retail Federation spokesperson told USA Today that thefts at self-checkouts were five times the average at regular checkouts, though "there are ways to distinguish between someone who accidentally forgets to pay or intentionally moves the item so it isn't scanned." He added that new conveyer machines will be able to scan all the items for shoppers, alleviating some problems, and that thefts aside, self-checkouts were more efficient than traditional ones.
