Guess what almost killed the 'Tiger Man of Africa'?3/29/2012
Filmmaker John Varty, so famed for his daring close-ups of big cats that he's been called "Tiger Man of Africa" and titled his autobiography "Nine Lives," was brutally mauled by a tiger at his own Tiger Canyons reserve. The 61-year-old Varty has stirred controversy in his efforts to save endangered animals by endangering his own life, filming big cats at incredibly close distances and bringing Asian tigers to live amongst native lions on his reserve. He was with a film crew when the tiger attacked him, but details of what prompted the attack are unclear. Varty is currently at a hospital, being treated for puncture wounds, broken ribs and "injuries all over his body, except his face."
Is Varty's work worth the risk?
