The nation’s most contaminated nuclear site is leaking radioactive sludge, according to the governor of Washington state. The Hanford Nuclear Reservation in south-central Washington holds waste from the production of atomic weapons, and federal officials agree that liquid levels are falling in one of its underground tanks, which are long-past their intended 20-year lifespan. Gov. Jay Inslee believes the leak could result in up to 300 gallons per year of toxic material leaching into the ground, posing a long-term threat to groundwater and rivers.
