Firefighters quizzed on lack of hairnets when serving Sandy food
11/23/2012Volunteers serving food to Sandy victims were reportedly unimpressed when officials from the New York City Department of Health paid them a visit. Firefighter Bobby Eustace said a health official issued a notice of violation after finding the food tent he was manning in Breezy Point, Queens, wasn't up to restaurant standards. After he was asked if he and his fellow firefighters were wearing hairnets, Eustace recalled he told the official, "We have helmets. This is a disaster area." A health department spokesperson said workers had been dispatched only to share information with volunteers about safe food handling. Eustace joked, "Personally, I was hoping we got one of those letter grades they give restaurants. We were hoping for an A." [Source]
