Man woke up during botched cataract surgery, lawsuit says
2/26/2013Waking up during surgery is a frightening prospect. Waking up during cataract surgery is just nightmarish. But that's what one Mississippi man says happened during a procedure at the Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans. Hector Alonso is suing the hospital and the surgeon, Dr. Shehab Ebrahim, who performed the surgery, claiming that Alonso woke up during the procedure and asked for it to be stopped. Alonso says he was forcibly restrained and had his mouth taped shut so he would quit complaining; he also says he swallowed a tooth during the struggle. The surgery was completed, but left him blind in his right eye. Alonso argues the procedure was botched, and his treatment constituted "torture." The hospital has not commented on Alonso’s lawsuit.
