Hero grandma dies saving grandson from speeding SUV
4/7/2012Eight-year-old Brian Herrera-Ramirez is alive this morning thanks to the ultimate sacrifice of his grandmother, Clara Almazo. The pair were walking home from a Staten Island church service when an SUV sped through an intersection. The quick-thinking Almazo pushed her grandson out of the way, but she was struck by the car, taking an impact that bystanders said "[threw her] 10 to 20 feet in the air." Almazo was pronounced dead at Richmond University Hospital. "That was heroic of her, thinking about the boy until the last second," a family friend told the New York Daily News. The driver, Brian McGurk, turned himself in after initially fleeing the scene.
