Wait, high school graduation rates are actually improving?

1/23/2013

Get the marching band ready and join in the masses screaming HUZZAH, because a recent government study shows that 78.2 percent of high school students are earning a diploma in four years — the highest percentage the country has seen since 1976. Minority groups have shown the most improvement. However, we still have a long way to go. 78.2 percent means a 21.8 percent national drop-out rate, which Education Secretary Arne Duncan regards as, "unsustainably high in a knowledge-based economy.” Let's give ourselves a little pat on the back and get back to work. Somebody might also tell Nevada (the state with the lowest graduation rate at 57.8 percent) to step it up. [Source]
