High-spirited soccer fans dress as Smurfs, take over stadium
5/7/2012Soccer has seen more than its share of hooligan fans, and not nearly enough fun-lovers like the group of 150 Hartlepool United supporters who took the train into London for the team's final match of the season wearing the colors ... of the Smurfs. Dressing up for their trip to the capital city is a Hartlepool tradition that goes back 25 years and has seen the fans dress as Oompa Loompas, morris dancers and the Wally/Waldo character. "It's all a bit of good craic (fun) and helps the day along," said organizer John Pearson, or Papa Smurf if you will. Now that's a real blue man group.
