Historic map's hidden symbol could solve Roanoke mystery

5/7/2012

400 years ago, some of the first British colonists of North America vanished without a trace, except for a wooden post carved with the word "CROATOAN." But now another clue has emerged about the lost colony of Roanoke -- hidden symbols on a map of Virginia drawn up by colony founder John White. The symbols weren't discovered until the map was examined on a light box, as patches had been mysteriously sewn over them. One symbol, researchers believe, indicates a fort -- somewhere the "lost" colonists could have traveled to. The land indicated by the symbol is now a golf course, so excavating could be problematic, but the secret symbol is still tantalizing. As one archaeologist said, "Every generation in the last 400 years has taken this search on ... None of them had this clue on this map."
