Suck it, ponies: Cheetahs get their chance to race at a horse track

12/18/2012

Uh, yeah, could I put $5 on the cheetah in lane 4? Wait, what? The Sam Houston Race Park hosted a different kind of critter to take part in a weekend race: a pair of cheetahs from the Houston Zoo. Apparently cheetahs need exercise too (what, no tiny cheetah treadmills?), and the wide-open lanes of the fenced-in horse track was just what they needed to wear themselves out. Kito and Kiburi, the 5-year-old brothers, were introduced to the track while walking on leashes (and "walk a cheetah on a leash" is now on our bucket list) and have been turned loose twice, racing to their spotted hearts' content. It beats the hell out of staring at tourists. [Source]
