Scientists spot a beautiful but utterly baffling spiral galaxy

7/20/2012

Scientists are perplexed after spotting a bizarrely shaped galaxy with the Hubble Telescope that they say shouldn’t exist. BX442, as the rebellious feature in the sky is being called, is a well-formed spiral galaxy that falls into the "grand-design" category. The catch? It is waaaaaay too old to look the way it does. Researchers estimate it is roughly 10.7 billion years old, which means it should be "clumpy and irregular." Yet this one is a stunning, spiraling beauty with perfectly geometrical components. This discovery, which has been published in the latest issue of Nature magazine, comes less than a month after the Higgs boson ‘God particle’ was discovered, giving scientists one more challenge in trying to understand the universe.
