Sometimes whale watching is better done from one of those big tourist boats, or even from shore. Laurent Lebihan and his friends got more than just an eyeful when they canoed out a few hundred yards from the Maui shoreline to see what they could see. What the Arizona man called a "love tap" from a humpback who either wanted to play or send a message came pretty close to sending the paddler in the bow overboard (and where are those lifejackets, folks?), and Lebihan himself commented that he was surprised he managed to hang on to his camera. "Good thing it was an adolsecent whale," he admitted.
